This area was pioneeded by Nev 'Mambo' Hines, founder of Freeline Indonesian Surf Adventures. He brought his first group here in 1994, staying in Krui and driving to the various breaks up and down the coast. From these years of scouring the coast in search of waves, it was at Ujung Bocor where most time was spent surfing long, empty lefts. In 1997 Stu Horstman joined Freeline to help Nev grow the businss and shortly afterwards the 'Big Rock 5' group was formed comprising of Nev, Stu, Mick Harris, Dave and John Rich.
In April 2000 the Big Rock 5 was able to secure the land in front of Ujung Bocor with construction of Ombak Indah Losmen commencing early 2001. The first group arrived at the losmen in September 2001. In 2007 Nev and his wife, Any Sitorus, move from Bali to the losmen to manage the place on a full-time basis.
Nev sadly passed away hear at his home here in May 2011 and Any, with help from Stu, has been running the losmen since.
Below are recollections from Nev and other friends who surfed the area in the early days. Enjoy the read.
